22 July 2015: Sunrise showing off this morning at Mertasari, but very little human action.

The cranky Banyuwangi kaki lima vendor is back and a new bulldog-walker, who spent ages sprucing up his brother's outfit. I spent most of the time chatting to HYPERLINK "https://www.facebook.com/siobhan.campbell.1485"Siobhan Campbell — who was on a bus to Sydney Uni from Mosman — about her crazy Javanese husband artist, Jumaadi. Jumaadi’s latest adventures in Arnhem Land with a gang of feisty indigenous Australian ladies (gins). They are telling him about how they walk with spirits and how he will make shadow puppets for a show. Here everyone walks with spirits too, but they kinda just take it in their stride — it has yet to get to the stage where the ordinary is considered extraordinary — appeasing, placating, and honouring with offerings of a myriad variety.

In two hours I am going to Pura Desa Sidakarya where a few hundred will spend a few thousand making offerings to demons and deities — start of the big consecration ceremonies for the newly refurbished Pura Dalem nearby. Barongs will come from all corners on Anggarkasih day next week. I will make a wayang show of it I guess
